SoHG Handicaps

SoHG offers this handicap service to all Hickory players, whether or not they are a member of the Society. All you need is a valid email address (see our privacy policy) for verification. This email address will also serve as your user id.

Since the beginning of hickory competitions creating a useable handicap for hickory play has been a debated issue. Attempts by tournament Directors to use modern day handicaps with a predetermined adjustment wasn’t always consistent throughout the competitive field of players. The only true version of a hickory handicap is a compilation of hickory scores, daily as well as tournament play, and applying an algorithm consistent with our state and national methods.

This site offers such a service. It is very easy to record scores along with the course information, rating and slope, etc. Just follow the prompts and fill in the blanks. It only takes a few scores to establish your handicap and you can monitor your progress as you go. Tournament scores are also listed separately for your review. The Society suggests the following for recording maximum scores per hole:

  • handicaps – 9 or less -- double bogey
  • handicaps – 10 to 19 -- 7
  • handicaps – 20 to 29 -- 8
  • handicaps – 30 and above -- 9
As most tournament Directors are now using only valid hickory handicaps for “net” divisions of competitions, you can be on the same comparative level as most of the players in the field. Don’t hesitate. Start today.
