The Southern Hickory Classic Returns to Its Roots
After 23 years, the Southern Hickory Classic made its triumphant return to its original location at The Fields Golf Club. This year’s tournament, April 2-4, was won by the celebrated duo of Taylor and Ed Jones, who repeated their winning performance from 2024, showcasing their skills and love for the game.
In a fresh approach, the tournament embraced a traditional 4-ball format while also introducing two unique formats for participants: The Tad Moore Hickory 4-ball and The Woody individual competition. This innovative combination marked the first time hickory golf enthusiasts could engage in both formats simultaneously, adding excitement and variety to the event.
A total of 36 players took on the challenge of the meticulously maintained golf course, which offered favorable distances designed to accommodate all skill levels. The competition was divided into three flights for the 4-ball portion and five flights for the men’s individual events, ensuring a competitive yet enjoyable atmosphere. Additionally, there was a dedicated flight for the ladies of the links, allowing female golfers to shine.
Participants were treated to an amazing dinner crafted by Chef Jamie Keating, which included a delicious buffet breakfast before the final round. The camaraderie extended late into the evening, with many attendees staying until after 9 p.m. to socialize, enjoy live jazz music, and savor fine cigars.
One of the highlights of the tournament was the introduction of 19 players to gutty golf through The Max Hollon Gutty Buddies initiative. This experience allowed participants to connect with the historical roots of the game, deepening their appreciation for hickory golf. This special experience honored Max Hollon of Indiana, who passed away earlier this year, and was well known to hickory golfers throughout the country.
The weather during the tournament was nothing short of superb, with conditions that made the course play hard and fast, reminiscent of the historic links of Scotland. This combination of excellent weather and a well-prepared course contributed to a memorable and competitive Southern Hickory Classic.
As the tournament concluded, players left with not only the memories of a great competition but also a renewed sense of community and appreciation for the rich traditions of hickory golf. The Southern Hickory Classic has successfully celebrated the spirit of the game, its heritage, and created new experiences for golfers of all ages.
