Sept. 19, 2020 – Ogunquit, Maine
On Saturday, Sept. 19, 2020, the first (modern era) official hickory tournament in Maine was played at Cape Neddick Country Club in Ogunquit. Cape Neddick CC is an 18-hole Donald Ross course established in 1919.
Because of travel and accommodation concerns related to Covid-19, only five hickory players were able to attend, playing as a single group.
Scoring was secondary to the experience of playing with hickory clubs on a fine September day, on a beautiful old course, in the company of like-minded golfers. Each participant received a Cape Neddick golf cap and a recently published history of the golf course.
The event was hosted graciously by Paul Haseltine, the club’s general manager, head pro Ryne Varney, and the staff of the restaurant/pub. The second such event already has a date on the CNCC calendar – Sept. 25 2021. Assuming life is more or less back to normal by then, we all expect the tournament will be much better attended.
Thanks to everyone’s efforts, we think that this year’s inaugural hickory tournament in Maine at CNCC has laid a solid foundation for the future.
