This year will likely bring several articles in golf magazines and journals about Francis and his important victory. We wanted to give you a head start with some of the historic writings about the 1913 U.S. Open. Three of the PDF links below will bring up articles written in 1913 from The American Golfer, the USGA Bulletin and the New York Times. The fourth is a scholarly piece written by a Univ. of Tennessee professor that studies the impact of Ouimet’s win on the sport and the culture of the time and identifies relevant cultural themes that, in a happy confluence of effect, served to bring golf to prominence in the United States.
Becasue the PDF files for American Golfer and the USGA Bulletin were a bit large, we’ve broken them up into two or three sections. These stories are typical of the publications of that day, very heavy with words and scores, but there are wonderful pieces from Ouimet and Vardon, interesting photos not usually seen, and accounts of day-by-day scores, etc.
