The 5th playing of the Vermont Hickory Open saw some 35 players gathered at the Copley Country Club in Morrisville, Vermont. See photos from the event here. Braving some “liquid sunshine” on day one, an especially strong field saw four separate competitors shoot rounds in the seventies. The field was paced on day one by SoHG Championship Series winner Rick Woeckener and local golfers Brian Cain and Jay Cooke, who were all in the clubhouse with 79s. Beautiful weather followed on the second day of play, as the nine-hole layout from the early 1930’s offered plenty of risks and rewards. However, it was the steady play of Doug Ruttle that took home the honors with a come-from-behind 80/78 for a winning total of 158. Woeckener and Cain tied for runner-up honors at 160.
In the Reserve Division, Rick Schmidt, with a net 153, managed to nip runner-up Brad Gregory who came in with 155. The Ladies title went to Susan Titterton, who was playing in the event with her husband, Bob. Both are Copley Country Club members. In the Senior Division, Chuck McMullin, of Virginia, played “pretty well,” he said, to score 165, ahead of Senior runner-up Paul Gaynor. Five older gents teed it up in the Super Senior (+70) division, with Frank Bashara posting 184 to win the title. Tournament co-founder Pat Kennedy turned in a 191 for runner-up honors.
