Roger Andrews, left, and Joe Hollerbach, right, accept the 2013
Southern 4-Ball trophy from event host Tad Moore.
There’s something about the Southern 4-Ball that just makes you feel good about playing hickory golf. Maybe it’s all the southern hospitality. Maybe it’s the delightful Highland Park golf course. Maybe it’s host and hostess Tad and Carol Moore. Maybe it’s seeing all your good friends and teaming up with your golf buddy to enjoy some golf.
Most likely, it’s all of the above.
Everything certainly worked just right for Roger Andrews and Joe Hollerbach, the 2013 Southern 4-Ball champs who bested a full field of 72 players or 36 teams, many traveling from Texas, New York, Wisconsin and Arizona.
Andrews/Hollerbach combined for a two-day gross of 136, eking out a 1-stroke victory over the teams of Brian Schuman/Rick Woeckener and Keith Cleveland/Bill Geisler.
The net division winners were Beau Boyd/Chris Searcy with a 111, in a scorecard playoff with the team of Cleveland/Geisler.
Host Tad Moore said that, taking all in all, he thought this was the best Southern 4-Ball yet. “We went from 2003-06 in LaGrange, Ga. We had events in Selma, Ala. from 2007-10, then moved to Birmingham in 2011. All the earlier events were good, but this one was just a lot fun.
The weather, hot on Thursday, cooled off from overnight thunderstorms and finished up in warming temperatures on Saturday. Tad said the course drained well, the greens were fast and everybody seemed to do really well. He gave a great nod of thanks to Director of Golf Evan Godfrey who helped Tad set the tees and pins and made everyone feel welcome.
Of course, Carol Moore, the consummate party planner, had the festivities rolling along and the party goers enjoying themselves from the very start. The Thursday night party at the golf club went from 6 to 7:30 p.m. with almost all the players, and their wives, having a great time. After lunch on Friday, and the golf, the bar was open to the players with hors d’oeuvres, drinks and plenty of great socializing.
Tad said that the club’s Chef Michael, was key to the Southern 4-Ball’s success. He provided great food, and even prepared breakfast for golfers on Saturday. His lunch that afternoon was BBQ and grilled-to-perfection chicken with other goodies.
Tad gave a very huge thanks to SoHG Champion Series sponsor Mountain Valley Spring Water and to the Southern 4-Ball sponsor Belfor Property Restoration. Bridgestone Golf also donated sleeves of golf balls for the players, their e6 balls and the B-330 RXS. Participants also received an event shirt, a Tervis tumbler and a ball marker.
They also got one heck of a fantastic hickory golf experience. Congratulations to Tad, to the sponsors and players for a fine hickory golf outing and keeping the momentum going for one of the best hickory golf seasons yet.
