2023 Oddball Golf Classic – Featheries and Gutties

Playing a feathery ball is, well, it’s different. Some few of you have given it a try and know exactly what we mean. It’s not easy to explain the exultation of getting 80 or more yards from a good drive. Come April, those who wish to add feather golf to their litany of golf stories for the 19th Hole can travel to East Peoria, Ill., where Denny and Cathy Lane are again hosting the Oddball Golf Classic, a mix of 18 holes of feathery golf and 18 of gutty golf.
Friday, April 14 is set aside for the feathery experience. For 2023, the event is expanding to 18 modified holes at the Hillcrest Golf Center in Washington, Ill. Denny, who works part-time at the course, creates the greens, adjacent to existing greens and somewhat smaller and, of course, rougher. These will be laid out toward the rear of the course’s longer nine using a different layout than previous years. Feather balls are provided, each hand made by the Lanes, and some shared bags of clubs appropriate for feather balls will be available as well. Tee times are scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
On the following day, Saturday, April 15, players will enter the gutty era, with either the McIntyre Braid or Park approved for play. The venue will be the Fairlakes Golf Club in nearby Secor. Tee times are scheduled for 10 a.m., with a possible shotgun start.
Fairlakes is a beautiful family-owned course on the Mackinaw River with rolling and hilly terrain. We will play from the forward tees; the entire course yardage is 4,274. Possibility of shotgun start so everyone can get done at about the same time. BONUS: You will get to meet Bunker, the course dog! We will have snacks and drinks, but the clubhouse bar will be open with a limited menu as well.
