Goodwin Gutty Open fields 11 for inaugural event

Hello hickory golfers,

The inaugural Goodwin Gutty Open was contested on Sept. 30, 2024, at the historic Goodwin Park Golf Course’s north course. The course, which was laid out by amateur golf enthusiasts in 1906, has hosted some of Hartford’s best golfers, and, in the 1920s and 1940s, often served as an occasional airfield. The course lies within Goodwin Park, laid out by famed landscape architect John Charles Olmsted, and sits across the street from Cedar Hill Cemetery, the resting place of such dignified guests as J.P. Morgan, Samuel Colt, and Katharine Hepburn.

Eleven golfers competed in two divisions – “modern” hickory and gutty. In addition to a beautiful early fall day, we were treated to some excellent golf from our field. Our modern open champion was Jeremy Dill of Gaylordsville, Conn., who posted a 42 in the 9-hole event. The senior modern champ was Roger Dionne, who also shot a 42. Our gutty open champ with a 52 was Christian Williams (aka The Hickory Hacker) of Port Jefferson, NY. Our senior gutty winner was Chris Gilgun of Uxbridge, Mass., who scored a 56.

Thank you to everyone who came out and competed, and to our hosts at Goodwin Park.  We’ll be ready to welcome a larger field next year!  A group photo from the day is shown below and more photos can be seen in the linked album.  The course took some photos and video as well, which you can find on their Instagram page.

I hope everyone has a great fall, and fingers crossed for some golfing weather this winter!
