A full field took to the historic 1914 Winter Park 9, listed as one of the top ten 9-hole golf courses in the United States. The course played firm like a links that you would find at the home of golf. The two-day event, Jan. 21-22, consisted of 18 holes on day one and nine holes where only four clubs were allowed on day two. Trophies were awarded for gross and net score. Former tour pro Wally Armstrong of Maitland, Fla., fired a 73 to win the day while Sanford’s Richard Boggs was the net leader with 68. The lady’s champ was BJ Hayden from Middleburg, Fla., at 82; with Marci Likens of Winter Springs, Fla., at net of 66. Handicap adjustment might be in order.
Day two’s 4-club challenge, called the Marci Maximus, brought in some blustery wind, but it did not effect Gil Feagin of Myrtle Beach who toured the links at even par 35 while Jim Davis of Grand Rapids, Mich., netted 30. Once again BJ Hayden took low with 43 and Marci Likens was net with 36.
It was a fantastic weekend with players coming from several states and Canada to participate. A big thanks to Bill and Elizabeth Geisler for organizing all the activity and to David and Jenn Webster for hosting a dinner gathering after Saturday’s round. Kudos also to Rich Grula and Natalie Wells for arranging lunch each day. Also, a nod to Marci for birddogging everyone’s accurate handicap. Would also like to thank Tad Moore of Selma and Will Jacoby of Louisville for their generous donations to help make this a special weekend.
