The Alex Lowe Trophy was played at the historic Wollongong Golf Club in New South Wales this past Feb. 23. The course was laid out on one morning in 1897 by Royal Sidney members Leonard Dobbin and Irving Kent. That same afternoon the two held an exhibition match over the newly built course, the holes barely fresh from being dug. The course has gone several improvements, the latest in 2014 by Ross Watson. It’s a great seaside and perfect for hickory golf.
Les Browne, vice president and captain of the Australian Golf Heritage Society, writes that the even garnered wonderful press coverage from a media that must be somewhat jaded or tired of the usual golf events.
ABC TV Illawarra covered the Alex Lowe hickory event at Wollongong last month. “The presenter, Sarah, is not a golfer so there may be a few inaccuracies, but it was eat exposure for our game,” Browne said. A short version of the report aired on ABC Weekend Breakfast, he added.
Browne also said that the ABC Sydney Instagram social page carried an item on the tournament and that a two-minute vertical video was placed on an BC Facebook page. That link is ABC Illawarra | Wollongong NSW | Facebook
Browne offered the following links to look for the press coverage:
