The 15th annual Vermont Hickory Open was contested on Aug. 13-14 at the beautiful Brattleboro Country Club, Brattleboro, Vt. The course is a challenging mix of the 1914 original design by Tom McNamara, a three-time U.S. Open runner up, which was redesigned by Wayne Stiles in 1930 and expanded, with some re-routing, by Steve Durkee in 2000.
Susan Plante, a newcomer to hickory golf and a member of Brattleboro Country Club, was victorious in the Ladies division. The Statesman Division was taken by a pair of Montague Golf Club members from Randolph, Vt.: Allen Johnson shot the low net and Peter Nowlan the low gross. Michael O’Donnell, of Newtown, Pa., shot the low net in the Senior division, and Bill “Wardy” Wardwell, of Turner Falls, Mass., was the division winner. Matt Dodds, playing out of Vermont National Golf Club in South Burlington, Vt., was the net winner in the Open division while Jeffrey Blomstedt, of Gill, Mass., and a member of the Greenfield Country Club, was the Open division winner.
