California’s Bagpiper skirls up a good one

The Pacific Coast Hickory Golfers conducted its Bagpiper tournament on Sunday, Feb. 2, at the Costa Mesa Country Club. It was conducted as a two-man Ryder Cup-style team event with six holes each of Best Ball, Alternate Shot, and scramble.

“It was a great day of hickory golf, says co-host and organizer Rick Perrault. Rudy Kastelic and Mark Wille were the other event organizers.

“We had guests Omar Aranbul from the Pacific NW Hickories, Andy and David Anderson from Wyoming, Jack Eichler from Riverside and Travis Russell from Newport Beach,” Perrault says. “It was a close match, with scores ranging from 70-76. The medal winners were Jim Barr and Rick Perrault.”

The winners received a medal, just like in the old days. The handmade medals were prepared by Chris McIntyre.

Medal Winners – Rick Perrault & Jim Barr
2 nd – Steve Carfino & Travis Russell
3 rd – Andy Anderson and David Anderson
In addition, the winners received $100 each, second $50 each and third $25 each. The comments from the players were very positive especially about playing stymies in competition. The format also aligned with our goal of enjoying ourselves and each other.

Our next events are:
A fun-day at Goat Hill in San Diego on March 19.
And World Hickory Day using the same format on May 4 at San Clemente Country Club.

“Thanks for coming, everyone, and please join us next year. We had a blast!”
