Jacob Orcutt reports:
The results are in for this year’s Smith-Collett Classic! Thank you to everyone who was able to attend – we have such a passionate, friendly, and welcoming group of hickory golfers here in the northeast, and it is always my honor to spend the day with you all. Before getting into the scores I must apologize for a scoring error as announced at the end of the event. I had mixed up the scores for two golfers from the Ball/Falcone/Mentz group and have reflected that correction here. I’ve also got some photos from the day Let me know if you have photos to share and I’ll try to set it up so that you can add your photos as well.
The 2024 Smith-Collett Classic brought 29 golfers from across the northeast to Shennecossett Golf Course in Groton, Conn. Participants competed using a modified stableford scoring system, with 1 point being awarded for bogeys, 2 points for pars, 3 points for birdies, and 4 points for eagles.
Our overall champion this year was Frank Flood of Collinsville, Conn., who scored an impressive 33 stableford points on his way to a 74. Louis Falcone of Cranston, R.I., came in second with 32 points and a 75; while past champion Joe Mentz of Vernon, Conn., scored 31 points with a 76.
Our net champion was also Frank Flood, netting 43 points. Jack Crosby of Concord, Mass., and Louis Falcone tied for second with 40 net points each.
In the Senior division, Frank Flood again took home the honors with his 33 points. Bill Wardwell of Turners Falls, Mass., came in second with 30 points, while Roger Dionne of Hampton, Conn., and Richard Walden of Killingworth, Conn., finished in a tie for third with 20 points.
Thanks again to all of our participants. The incredible hickory golf community from New England and beyond is what makes this event so special every year.
