Bruce Johnson reports:
The second annual H₂G Hickory Classic was held Saturday, Aug. 20, 2022, at Coldwater Golf Links in Ames, Iowa. The event was a fundraiser to benefit “Moving Veterans Forward,” a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to helping homeless veterans in Iowa and Nebraska to get placed in homes. The main goal of the organization is to give these veterans the boost they need to turn themselves around and to become self-sufficient. The event was co-sponsored by the Hickory Golf Association, which is also a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.
Forty-three golfers took part in the tournament and competed in one of two divisions: Hickory and Non-Hickory (modern clubs). After welcoming remarks by Coldwater Golf Links General Manager Barrett Randall, Patrick Medved from “Moving Veterans Forward” spoke to the participants explaining the organization and thanking everyone for their support. Randall and event organizer, Scott Rosheim, then explained the 18-hole foursome scramble format and the golfers advanced to their assigned holes for the 9:30 a.m. shotgun start. Box lunches, provided by local Ames restaurant the Café, were arranged by Coldwater.
Winners of the Hickory Division were John Piffer, Russ Fisher, Bruce Johnson and Scott Rosheim, with a winning score of 64 on the par 71 track, shooting from the red tees. The Non-Hickory winners (Mike Lynch, Travis VanDerHart, Doug Hron, and Steven Williams), teeing up from the white tees, also shot 64. All participants had a great time on a beautiful, sunny Iowa day (interspersed with a few much-needed rain showers), and over $500.00 was raised to help the homeless veterans.
H₂G (“Two Hickory Guys”) is an unofficial, informally-organized partnership founded by Scott Rosheim and Bruce Johnson for the purpose of enjoying and promoting the hickory game while at the same time collecting, restoring and doing light maintenance on hickory clubs for themselves and their friends. Plans are already under way for next year’s third annual H₂G Hickory Classic.
