Bill Martin reports:
Despite a slightly smaller turnout, our day at Hollywood, May 18, was a huge success from many perspectives.
First the dirty details prior to filling in some of the blanks.
1st Gross – Jared Paletti
2nd Gross – Ron Perlman
1st Reserve – Michael O’Donnell
2nd Reserve – Bill Martin
Hollywood did an outstanding job setting up the course especially for MHS with a hybrid tee arrangement.
A foursome composed of MHS regular Ron Perlman, experienced player Michael O’Donnell who has attended the 2021 USHO and Tad Moore’s Southern Four Ball in Birmingham; Ian Tracy one of our kilted clad players who was breaking out the old sticks for the very first time; and exquisitely dressed Jared Paletti, who is a real player; were joined by Kyle, who, we were told, was the best caddie/historian that HGC has to offer. Views of the course – 16 holes and 10 pins can be seen from one vantage point – were pointed out by Kyle who also shared vast insights about HGC.
Another foursome included stalwarts Jon Byron, Ed DeSalvio, and Brian Cardew who also wore a kilt. The Belmar winds blew during midway through the round, so I imagine the kilts provided extra thrills!
Finally, Old Tom Morris, one of our Hackensack regulars, was joined by yours truly and new player John Fieseler who, with six borrowed originals, bested Old Tom and myself on his maiden voyage. Tom admittedly did not have his best day, but John displayed exceptional skill, especially with a Stewart mashie into the elevated 18th finisher with a thrilling par.
All in all we had two first timers to hickory golf, and four who were cutting their teeth with MHS in their first event. The future looks bright with three more venues lined up for this season. I will have pictures of the day once I become a bit more organized. We have many to choose from compliments of the players themselves.
Our thanks to Rob Wolf for sponsoring our day at this iconic tract less than a mile from the Atlantic. Rob was unable to join us for golf but met us mid-round on the course and was absolutely encyclopedic afterwards at dinner with his architectural, historical, and restoration knowledge. We all owe Rob and everyone at Hollywood GC a debt of gratitude.
Cheers in hickory!
