July 15, 2020 – The Villages, Florida
Bound to happen. Hickory golf is just too much fun and in a place like The Villages, Florida’s famed retirement community, it was sure to find a home at some point. Jeff Shain, a senior writer for The Daily Sun, the Village’s news leader, learned of Mike Hobson, a retiree from Virginia, who was playing with hickories and had a workshop in his home to work on and maintain his collection.
Shain’s story is a good one, describing Hobson’s joy in the game and in working with his clubs. The story also gives some ink to the SoHG, the Florida Hickory Golfers, and the fact that the Florida State Golf Association has recently integrated a series of hickory golf events into its annual schedule.
Click here to see a PDF of the story, shared with us by John Fischer III via a friend who lives in The Villages. Meanwhile we’d like to invite all our golfing friends in The Villages to visit Hobson and take up the game. Surely there should be an annual Villages Hickory Golf Championship.
