White Mountain, N.H.
Jim Pucci reports:
The second annual White Mountain Hickory Open was completed on Sunday, July 8 under beautiful blue skies. The weather all weekend was spectacular. Those who played well overcame the distraction of the inspiring views on nearly every hole. Players from Florida, Pennsylvania and New Brunswick, Canada made the trek to northern New Hampshire.
Day one saw cool temps and breezy conditions. The greens were rolling fast and players were tested with tricky pin placements. Jack Crosby of Concord, Mass. posted an 82 and held a one-shot lead over Greg Shayka in the Open Division. Gary Melanson of New Brunswick, Canada shot 75 to open up a demanding seven-shot lead over Bernie Alessandrini in the Senior Division.
The weather on day two was nothing short of perfect. Roy Lavender took advantage of the perfect scoring conditions to shoot a 76 and post a two-day total 162 to take the Open Division. Gary Melanson backed up his stellar 75 with another great round of 76 for a 151 total to win the Senior Division. The top three Gross and Net scores for each division as listed below.
A special “thank you” to Vince Runyon, director of golf at the Omni Mount Washington Resort. He and his staff went out of their way to make the second annual White Mountain Hickory Open a successful and enjoyable event for all. The New England Hickory groups look forward to holding future events at this breathtaking property. (Photos below, too. Click on any photo to enlarge.)
