The 2011 Southern Hickory 4-Ball was a fine success, said host Tad Moore. ” Twenty-four teams participated this year. After a very tough competition two young players emerged as winners with the best score yet in the event,” he says. ” The golf course was exceptional and is an excellent hickory venue. The Thursday night kickoff party was fun with a trade show, food and live music.”
Moore said the event will be at Highland Park again in 2012, two weeks following the Masters. ” Mark it down as a must for starting your season of hickory golf.” Overall winners were Pat Boyd and Ben Hollerbach with an event record total of 136. ” I’ ve never played hickory golf before,” Boyd said. ” I sure did enjoy it. Looks like now I’ ll have to buy some clubs of my own.”
Mike Just and Josh Fischer won the low net title with a sizzling 120. (Probably playing with some secret weapons from Louisville Golf!) Just said he really enjoyed the course. ” I don’t hit the ball very far off the tee and the distance the course played allowed me to reach many of the par 4’s with an iron. I had the best two tournament rounds I’ve ever had. That makes it a whole lot of fun.” Second place overall was the team of Bill Sewell and Doug Floyd. Second place net went to Greg Vogelsang and Chris Searcy.
This was a grand kickoff for the Championship Series sponsored by Mountain Valley Spring Water. It was certainly a hit with Just, who said he loves the idea of the Series and hopes for increased participation in the events that comprise the set – the other three being the U.S. Hickory Open, the Heart of America and the Mid Pines Hickory Open. “I am going to play in at least three of the four events, and will play in the fourth if I can make room in my schedule,” Just said. “Thanks to everyone who works to host these events, the SoHG, and the sponsors for making the events available to hickory golfers.” Next up in the Series is the U.S. Hickory Open, July 11-13, in French Lick, Ind. We hope to see you there.
