The Ocean State Golf Society invites hickory golfers to the 2020 Gold Mashie Tournament at Wanumetonomy Golf and Country Club.
From 1923-28, the Gold Mashie was originally held over the fabled Ocean Links course in Newport, R.I. The personal property of T. Suffern Tailer, the course was considered one of the best in the country. Designed by Seth Raynor, it proved to be a true test for the best amateur golfers in the country who traveled to play in the Gold Mashie at the end of each summer. When Tailer passed in the winter of 1928 the course and the tournament died with him.
This summer, the Gold Mashie returns as an 18-hole hickory event to be played over Wanumetonomy Golf Club, another Seth Raynor design just 15 minutes from where Ocean Links once stood. It overlooks Narragansett Bay on the western coast of Aquidneck Island and is less than 10 minutes from downtown Newport.
The low gross champion will be awarded a replica of the original Gold Mashie Trophy, while net champions in the Open, Senior, and Ladies divisions will take home other awards.
